How I started a Children’s Birthday Party Entertainment Side Hustle

Birthday celebrations are exciting and memorable for children, and at-home birthdays are a fun way to celebrate a child’s birthday. However, finding ways to entertain the party guests can be a struggle for parents. I came up with an entertainment solution for parents that helped me make extra cash on the side. I was able to expand my successful Afterschool Enrichment Class into Birthday party entertainment!

I started and ran a successful craft making Afterschool enrichment class as a side hustle and made $12,000 working only 1 hour a day, 5 days a week in 8 weeks teaching this class at elementary schools, you can read about that here. I would make a fun and unique crafts at each of my classes that the children absolutely adored making. I had such a fulfillment working with the children and seeing the delight and excitement on their faces, I began to think of ways that I could expand my Afterschool class to further increase my income while still trying to stay within the niche that I had mastered.

That’s how I came up with the idea that I would start offering birthday party entertainment. Entertaining children’s birthday parties are a great way to make extra cash on the side and it’s ideal for those that don’t have much time to spare during the week because almost all birthday parties are held on the weekends.

Parents love hiring entertainment for their child's at-home birthday party!

1. It reduces the stress related to hosting a party

2. Every party guest gets included in the activity

3. Parents can participate in the activity with their child so they can bond

4. It also saves time and money with the convenience of being at their home

Before the start of every one of my Afterschool craft classes, I would remind the kids that my Crafts Class can come to their birthday parties too! I found that this was the best marketing tactic that I used because since the kids were already in my class and loved the crafts, they would tell their parents as soon as they got picked up that they wanted my craft session at their birthday party.

I had taken pictures on my cellphone of over 100 different crafts that I had created for my class, so I would have the birthday girl or boy look at the pictures and pick what craft they wanted to make for their party. I added a portion to my website for birthday party event scheduling with price break down as well as a form of payment to book a slot on my calendar. After the parent had booked a date 2 weeks in advance of the party, I would prepare all the necessary materials for the craft for the number of children attending. I would also bring extra supplies in case there were siblings or extra guests that wanted to make the craft at the last minute. I charged $225 for up to 10 children and $20 per each additional child for a 1 hour session. I made $265 only working 1 hour at my first birthday party!

My client base came directly from the students that enrolled in my Afterschool class. The parties were a success and through word of mouth, my Afterschool class which expanded to birthday party entertainment became a huge hit and my calendar was booked.

There are so many unique ideas to choose from when it comes to offering party entertainment and there is promising opportunity to make extra income doing birthday parties every weekend, and even more money making opportunities doing more than one birthday party in a day!

My Afterschool Enrichment Class opened different doors of opportunity to make extra income. From birthday parties, I went on to summer camps as well. If you want to be your own boss and start making more money, an Afterschool Enrichment Class is a great way to do just that!
